| JUNE 2009 RELEASES June 7, 2009 Shorthanded Falcons win State Title by Doug Ripley CLICK HERE June 6, 2009 Cox boys punch ticket to State Final The Cox Falcons got two goals and two assists from Will Martin in its 4-0 victory over host Westfield in Saturday's VHSL Group AAA Boys Soccer Semifinal nightcap. The Falcons will take on Mills Godwin, a 2-0 winner over Hickory, in Sunday's 4pm State Championship match. It marks the most wins recorded by the Falcons in a single season and their first trip to a state final for them or any Eastern Region boys side since 1997. In AAA girls soccer state semifinal action at Westfield High School, the Chantilly Chargers unloaded three goals in the first 15 minutes to roll to a 3-0 win over Kempsville, ending the Chiefs' memorable run at 13-6-2. Chantilly advances to Sunday's 2pm State Championship match against Mills Godwin who knocked out Cox by also logging a pair of early goals. Jessie Klamut's 79th minute goal wasn't enough for Cox as it fell 2-1 to the Central Region champs. Due to heavy rain accumulations the past three days in the DC Metro Area, combined with the anticipation of more rain today, the 2009 Virginia High School League Group AAA Spring Sports Jubilee has been postponed a day. The Jubilee, home to this year's AAA State Championships for soccer, lacrosse, baseball, and softball, is still slated to take place at Westfield High School. The State Soccer Semifinals, originally slated for tomorrow, will now begin at NEW STARTING TIMES on SATURDAY, June 6, and the championship games will be played on SUNDAY, June 7. The National Weather Service issued a flood watch Thursday for most locales in Northern Virginia, Washington D.C., and Maryland through Friday. Additional rain is expected through Friday evening, but the forecast still calls for sunny skies Saturday and Sunday with temperatures between the upper-70's and lower-80's. The Falcon girls host Forest Park at 5:30 while the boys will play Gar-Field at 7:30... Kempsville and Hickory hit the road for opening night.
