Will Martin scored two goals for the Falcons to take an early second half lead after Jose Rentas gave his SunDevils an early lead... First Colonial and Kellam played to a 1-1 tie at FC, a result that could prove valuable or detrimental down the stretch in the Beach... Princess Anne came from a goal down to defeat Kempsville on the road, 2-1. Both Cavalier goals were scored by Nate Wrenn... Green Run moved to 5-1-0 and won its first Beach game since 2007, defeating Bayside 4-1... In the Peninsula District, Kecoughtan showed how important Robert Alberti is to the future success of the Warriors. The Knights, who led the Patriots 4-2, surrendered just one in the second half and hung on for the important 4-3 win. BOYS: Alex Gylfason and Josh Kelly notched goals for First Colonial who defeated Landstown, 2-0... Cox stormed out to a 4-0 lead in the first half and ended up beating Kempsville 6-2 behind a hat trick from David Ellis in his Beach debut and two more from Ryan Oakes... On the pitch, Hickory swept the doubleheader with Chesapeake rival Great Bridge 2-1 in the boys match and 1-0 in the girls tilt. Elsewhere in the area on Saturday... Facilities with FieldTurf did play on last night. The Beach District girls teams swept victories in the opening day of the Maury Invitational at Powhatan Field. Kellam got a pair of goals from Bonney in their opening win over Hickory, 2-0 while Landstown surprised a few people in the nightcap as they knocked off the host Commodores thanks to another double from Massey. As for the boys, Jamestown defeated Menchville 1-0 with a fourth minute tally from Michael Wood. LINKS: DAILY PRESS: Eagles shut out Monarchs - Lynn Burke March 16, 2009 Maury Invitational begins today at Powhatan Slow night in Eastern Region soccer - part of that had to do with the foul weather once again - but some interesting things happened. In Hampton, Patrick Thompson's five goals led Lake Taylor to a 6-3 win over Phoebus, while Green Run boys moved to 3-0 against Eastern District opponents following its 5-3 win over Granby, with four chipped in by Roy. The Green Run girls earned a 1-1 draw with Granby at Powhatan Field. Tonight marks the opening session of the Maury Invitational also at Powhatan. The girls hit the pitch first as Kellam faces Hickory at 5:15, and Landstown takes on Maury at 7:15pm. March 14, 2009 Storm wreaks havoc for second day The coastal storm that has hung around the eastern seaboard since early Friday morning continued its control on local soccer as girls matches were cancelled due to unsafe playing conditions. The second day of the Virginia Beach Soccer Showcase was ultimately shortened from five to two games and moved to Norfolk's Powhatan Field. There, Maury earned a 2-2 tie with Group AA contender Blacksburg... Outside Hampton Roads, Ocean Lakes took a 3-0 loss Saturday at Forest Park. Despite the lack of precipitation accumulating in the area leading into the weekend, many of the local facilities had difficulties draining this excess moisture, forcing many cancellations or postponements. Some soccer was played though... On the boys side, First Colonial's new head coach returned to old form as Kevin Denson's Patriots dealt Maury its first loss of the season, 2-0 at Powhatan Field thanks to a pair of goals from Alex Gylfason... Indian River took care of business in its 8-0 win at home against Bayside.... and Green Run picked up another win over an Eastern District opponents, defeating Wilson 5-2 in Portsmouth. As for the girls, four teams did see some action at Cox High School in the opening session of the Virginia Beach Soccer Showcase. Mary Morgan's first goal of what should be many again this season wasn't enough to hold off First Flight. The Nighthawks. from the Outer Banks of North Carolina, beat the Commodores 2-1 thanks to a 79th minute goal from Stacey Kelly... Up in Northern Virginia, Ocean Lakes earned a draw in its season opener at Woodbridge while in Franklin County, Salem came away a 4-3 winner over Franklin. March 12, 2009 SE District teams off to solid start against early opponents In Poquoson, Great Bridge boys dealt Kecoughtan its second straight 1-0 defeat in as many nights at the Christine Garvey Memorial Tournament while in Virginia Beach, Grassfield earned a shutout sweep over Tallwood in both boys and girls soccer as the Southeastern District had a pretty good Thursday. In other boys games, James City County, Kempsville earned itself a solid 1-1 draw with Jamestown... Landstown got a 2-0 win over Warwick at home... Gloucester defeated Poquoson 2-0 also at the Garvey Memorial while Grafton beat Menchville 1-0. In girls soccer, First Colonial got four second half goals to beat Western Branch 4-0 in their season opener... Great Bridge pasted York 5-0... and the Peninsula District fared well in Day 2 of the Garvey Memorial with Gloucester winning 6-3 over Poquoson, while Menchville and Kecoughtan picked up draws with their Bay Rivers District opponents.
