| Cox trails early, comes up short vs. Godwin Klamut's 79th minute strike not enough to level the Falcons with the Eagles BOX SCORE Doug Ripley - June 6, 2009 CHANTILLY - For the second consecutive season, the Beach District and Eastern Region Champion Cox Falcons' postseason run ended in the VHSL Group AAA Semifinals at Westfield. There, the Falcons surrendered two early goals over a nine minute span and couldn't mount a goal until it was too late, falling 2-1 to Mills Godwin to complete its season with a record of 20-2-2. Godwin (18-3-1) advanced to Sunday's State Championship, becoming the first Central Region team to make it to the finals since Clover Hill in 2003. They'll face Chantilly for the AAA Girls Soccer State Championship Sunday at 2pm. The Eagles, similar to their next opponent in the earlier semifinal, put the Falcons in what became an insurmountable hole. Ellen Upton pushed Godwin ahead in the ninth minute by deflecting the ball into the net from the far right post off an Anne Lumpkin corner. Cox then found itself down 2-0 in the 18th minute when Becca Haislip's midfield gamble paid off from the right side. Her 55+ yard blast slipped through the arms of GK Rachel King and rolled into the net. The Falcons' best chance to cut the deficit in half during the opening half came in the 38th minute when a miss-communication between a pair of Godwin defenders gave Emory Camper a chance to come up on the ball. Godwin keeper Jessie Ashworth was able to thwart the ball in a different direction with her slide before Camper could make a touch on the 1 v 1 exchange. Cox continued to increase its pressure early in the second half, desperately looking to get on the board but found it difficult attempting shots. Jessie Klamut's right side run in the 43rd minute resulted in a shot that just missed the right upper-90. Cox's last great chance appeared to be cut short during the 62nd minute. Klamut, coming from the upper-left corner of the box, slid a ball through traffic to Charley Martin who appeared level with the last defender to her left. The flag went up from the assistant referee on the right side to indicate she was in an offside position. The Falcons finally got on the board with a minute remaining in regulation when Klamut headed in a left side cross from Charley Martin that came shortly after the ball was touched into her from Camper in the corner. The sophomore's goal wasn't enough for Cox who fell in its second straight trip to Westfield for the state semifinals. Godwin finished the match with a 13-8 shot advantage. King ended up with five saves for the Falcons while Ashworth collected one for the Eagles. |
