Landstown boys quickly jump on Kellam
BOYS:  Landstown took control of a battle of unbeatens and never looked back, scoring all of
its goals in the first half en route to a 3-0 win over Kellam.  Clay Newton scored twice for the
Eagles who will, as a result, be a part of the final meeting of unbeaten Eastern Region teams
when they host Cox Tuesday night.  The Falcons were nearly trapped into their first loss,
facing a 1-1 halftime score at Princess Anne, until senior Ryan Oakes drove home two goals
to give Cox the 3-1 win.  Cox stays tied in the Beach with Salem at the midway point.  The
SunDevils edged Tallwood 2-1 to win its fifth straight game, and a half-game ahead of
Landstown.  Elsewhere in Beach play, Brian White's three goals and Brooks Nopper's two led
First Colonial to its first Beach win, ending a three match skid 9-0 over Green Run, while
Kempsville picked up its third straight clean sheet, 4-0 over Bayside... In the Peninsula
District, Kecoughtan and Bethel remained atop the table with a pair of victories Friday night.
The Warriors rode Max Wayman-Arndt's goal to an important 1-0 result over Gloucester while
the Bruins avoided overtime with a last-possession goal from Paul Hem as they beat
Hampton 2-1.  Menchville stayed hot in pursuit a point back, ending their two game scoreless
streak with a 7-1 rout over Phoebus led by Justin Kaiser's hat trick.  Denbigh moved into a tie
for fifth place with Warwick after a 1-0 win over Woodside, dealing the Wolverines its fifth
straight defeat... Back on the Southside, in an Eastern District make-up from Monday, Maury
blanked Lake Taylor 5-0.  Tyler Ferring had three goals to increase his season total to 11.
GIRLS:  With Ocean Lakes on the bye Friday, Cox took a half-game lead in the Beach District,
albeit narrowly.  The Falcons surpassed Princess Anne 1-0 on a Jessie Klamut volley.
Kempsville is still unbeaten in the Beach after clipping Bayside 2-0 to improve to 3-0-1 in
district and 5-2-1 overall.  While down two points to Kellam for third, the Chiefs have a match
in hand.  The Knights shut-out Landstown 3-0 for its third straight victory.  Salem moved into a
tie with Bayside for sixth by beating Tallwood 2-0.  Kayela Gray scored both of the SunDevils'
goals.  First Colonial is alone in fifth after punishing Green Run 8-0... In Peninsula District
play, Menchville stayed unbeaten at 6-0-0 with a 4-2 win over Phoebus, becoming the first PD
team to clinch a playoff spot.  Gloucester remains in second with a 3-0 win at Kecoughtan.
Denbigh had a chance to solidify third position even further but was forced into a 2-2 tie with
Woodside.  Had the playoffs started today, Hampton would claim the sixth and final PD spot.
This, after the Crabbers beat Bethel 4-0 led by Emily Stumpf's second straight trick to stay two
points clear of Warwick who beat Heritage the night before after an April Stone triple.

IR boys, WB & GB girls grab big SED wins
GIRLS:  The picture in the Southeastern District sharpened up more clearly on Thursday
evening thanks to a couple big games.  Western Branch came up with a season-saving
victory over Hickory 1-0.  Taylor Callwood's match-winner vaults the Bruins into a four way tie
in points with Great Bridge, Hickory and Oscar Smith.  The Wildcats, who have a match in
hand coming up on Monday with King's Fork, also slid past Indian River 1-0 with Nickie Ivey's
77th minute strike.  A win Monday will help Great Bridge keep pressure on current leader
Grassfield who took care of business at King's Fork, 6-0.  Sam Phillips led the Grizzlies with a
pair of goals.  Elsewhere in the SED, Nansemond River won 4-0 over Deep Creek as Brittany
Frame added two goals, and Ramos and Torres scored two each for Oscar Smith who
smothered Lakeland, 9-0... In Eastern District play, Churchland dealt Lake Taylor a tough 5-2
defeat as Rice and Jones each provided a double, Mary Morgan again ran up a large number
of goals with six in Maury's 8-0 win over Norview, Granby cruised 11-0 over Norcom as nine
different Comets entered the score book, and Nancy Dickson put four goals up for Wilson in
their 8-0 win at Booker T. Washington.  Kara Jones also added two for the Lady Presidents
who improved to 5-2-0, 2-1-0 in the ED... One game took place on the Peninsula Thursday as
Warwick shut-out Heritage 5-0.  April Stone's hat trick gave her 10 goals on the sason while
Hilary Hines scored the other two Raider goals.  BOYS:  There are now just three remaining
unbeaten teams in Eastern Region boys soccer, and all reside in the Beach District.  This,
after Indian River edged Great Bridge for a huge 1-0 result that puts the Braves on the top of
the Southeastern District table at 12 points.  The Braves are two points ahead of Hickory and
Oscar Smith who both won their Thursday SED tilts.  The Hawks tripped up Western Branch
3-1 while the Tigers smoked Lakeland 8-0.  Richard Diaz and Trotman with two each for
Smith.  Elsewhere in SED play, Grassfield blanked King's Fork 5-0 with Boone scoring twice,
and Nansemond River won its first match of the season, clipping Deep Creek 3-2.  Wendel
Foster scored twice for the Warriors... In the Eastern District, Churchland scored a crucial
home win over Lake Taylor, 3-0, Booker T. Washington had Wilson on the ropes before
succumbing to a late goal and earning a 1-1 draw, while Maury and Granby each rolled to big
wins, 11-0 and 8-0 respectively.  Multiple goals scored by Tyler Ferring (4) and Ryan Lee (2) of
Maury, and Alex King (2) of Granby... And, on the Peninsula, Warwick's boys also came up
with a 5-0 victory over Heritage with Paul Dreybus scoring two of the Raiders' goals.

Granby swept by Tabb
The busiest day of the 2010 season was followed by one of the lightest loads as Granby
hosted Tabb in a non-district doubleheader at Powhatan Field in Norfolk.  The Comets fell on
the losing end in both matches Wednesday night to the Tigers from the tough Bay Rivers
District of Group AA.  Granby's boys team dropped just their second match of the season, 4-2
to the Tigers.  Chris Edmond did score a Comet goal to increase his season total to 14.
Earlier in the evening, the Granby girls were skunked by Tabb 5-0.  The Comets join the rest
of the Eastern District in competition today along with a key slate of games from the
Southeastern District.

Menchville draw tightens up Peninsula
BOYS: The shuffle amongst the Peninsula District Table reached a peak in activity on
Tuesday.  Menchville, a week removed from winning at defending champion Kecoughtan,
have fallen out of first place in the PD after a pair of ties, the most recent coming at home to
Denbigh, 0-0.  Kecoughtan and Bethel, who began the day tied for second a point behind the
Monarchs in the standings, now sit in a tie atop the PD with 12 points each with Menchville a
point back in third.  The Warriors, who defeated the Bruins on April 13, edged Phoebus on
Tuesday 1-0 with the match-winner coming from Josh Richardson off an Austin Smith assist.
As for the Bruins, they shut-out Woodside 2-0 on goals by Paul Hem and Colby West to
capture their fourth straight victory.  The tightening of the race doesn't end at the top as seven
teams remain within six points of the lead with four matchdays to go.  Gloucester moved up to
fourth with 10 points, jumping a point ahead of Warwick with a 2-1 result over the Raiders.
Denbigh (7 pts) and Phoebus (6 pts) tail Warwick in the table.  Elsewhere in the PD, Hampton
won its first district match, improving to 3-6-0 overall with a 3-0 win over Heritage... Things
were more tame down in the Beach District Tuesday.  Alex Feliciano had an impressive hat
trick for Kellam, scoring twice in the first half and, despite a Princess Anne response and
Kellam player ejection in the second, logging his third goal a man down as the Knights beat
the Cavaliers 3-1.  Kellam remains in a 3-way tie atop the Beach table with Cox and Salem.
The Falcons now are in the midst of their second longest winning streak in program history,
catching their 16th straight at home with a 4-0 scoreline over Tallwood.  Drew Hartell with a
pair of goals for the only spotless team in the area.  As for the SunDevils, they took care of
business at Bayside, 8-0.  Kharlton Belmar led Salem with two goals.  Landstown also
remained unbeaten and a half-game clear via their earlier bye.  The Eagles clipped Ocean
Lakes 3-1 as Clay Newton recorded his second double of the season.  Kempsville also
remained in the hunt, moving into fifth position at 2-1-0 in district play following a 9-0
annhilation of Green Run.  Alex Vaughan and Taylor Jones led the Chiefs with two goals
apiece... The top four teams in the Southeastern District held serve on Tuesday.  Oscar Smith
edged Western Branch 1-0 to stay tied for third with Hickory at 2-0-1, two points clear of Great
Bridge and Indian River.  The Wildcats improved to 8-0-2 overall with a 4-0 win over King's
Fork as Will Cason provided a hat trick.  The two other top four teams had a much easier go
of it as Indian River thumped Deep Creek 10-0 and Hickory beat Nansemond River 6-0.
Multiple goal scorers in those two tilts were Paul Dillon (3) and Devon Fisher (2) for the
Braves and Tyler Crather (2) for the Hawks.

GIRLS: Most higher positioned girls soccer teams held true to form around the Eastern
Region Tuesday; however, there were a couple near-shockers.  We stay in the Southeastern
District as Hickory needed overtime to surpass Nansemond River, 2-1.  Courtney Roach's
strike from Kelly Corrigan was enough for the Hawks to stay in third place of the SED.
Western Branch made the most movement among the SED contenders, jumping up at least
two spots with a critical 4-1 win at Oscar Smith.  The win ties the Bruins with the Tigers in
terms of points and, more importantly, gives them a head-to-head tiebreaker.  Who's tied for
first?  It remains Indian River and Grassfield who each stand at 3-0-0 in district competition.
The Braves made quick work of Deep Creek 10-0 while the Grizzlies blasted Lakeland 13-0.
Seven multi-goal scorers among the co-leaders Tuesday... In Beach District play, Kellam
jumped out to a 4-1 halftime lead over Princess Anne and held on for the same score at full
time.  Now with nine points, Kellam remains a loss clear of Ocean Lakes and Cox who each
won by at least a touchdown in their Beach games to stay deadlocked in first, each 9-0-1
overall and 4-0-0 in district play.  The Dolphins rolled 7-0 over Landstown with two Candace
Thomas goals while the Falcons scored five of their six goals in the first half in their shutout
win over Tallwood.  Jessie Klamut and Molly Jarrett each notched a pair of Cox goals.
Bayside shook off its narrow defeat of Cox with another 1-0 result, this time a win over Salem.
Nikki Liette with the match-winner for the Marlins who move into fifth with a 2-2-0 Beach mark.
They sit a point behind Kempsville who has a match in hand on Bayside.  The Chiefs moved
to 2-0-1 in the Beach with an 11-0 romp over Green Run as three Kempsville players scored
two apiece (Weidner, Boubouheropoulos, Smith)... Menchville continues to distance itself
from the rest of the Peninsula District.  At 5-0-0 in the PD, the Monarchs may eventually
become the first team to punch a ticket to Regionals in 2010 at the current rate.  Menchville
earned a key clean sheet over defending champ Denbigh 2-0 Tuesday in Newport News with
both goals coming from Meredith McDowell.  Gloucester stays three points behind and now in
second place.  That coming after Linsey Snavely's goal stood up for the Lady Dukes who beat
Warwick 1-0.  Denbigh falls into a tie for third place at 10 pts with Kecoughtan.  C. Hines put it
in net twice as the Warriors beat Phoebus 5-0 to improve its standing.  Hampton picked up its
second win in district competition, blanking Heritage 4-0 thanks to an Emily Stumpf hat trick.
The win helps the Crabbers stay at least in contention for a playoff bid down the road.

ground, Kellam's boys side found themselves in a pinch Friday night at Tallwood.  The
Knights and Lions went to extra frames after a scoreless 80 minutes.  Rohen Gresalfi's 83rd
minute match winner kept Kellam unbeaten... After cruising through non-district play

the host Crabbers as Paul Dreybus scored a pair of Raider goals.  GIRLS:  First Colonial and
Kempsville halved their district match Friday, 0-0, keeping the Chiefs unbeaten in the Beach
while the Patriots stay in the middle of the table... Bayside's first game following their
statement-making victory at Kellam came against defending champ Cox.  The Marlins further
legitimized their claim as a team to beat in the Beach for 2010, falling a tad short against the
visiting Falcons, 1-0.  Brittany Krause with the Cox winner in the first half... Elsewhere in
Beach play, Ocean Lakes stayed tied for first with Cox by beating Princess Anne 4-1 (Kayla
White: 2 goals), Kellam responded to their recent defeat by obliterating Tallwood 9-1 (Katie

Bayside girls stun Kellam in extra time
On one of the wildest days in recent memory that you wish you could have multiple headlines,
a day where contenders fell or settled for unexpected draws all over the place, we may look
back at one game in Virginia Beach as being the upset of the decade.  Granted, this decade
is in its infancy, but we here at
Eastern Region Soccer Online aren't about over-exaggeration.
Here's the account of what went down in the Eastern Region.  GIRLS:  Bayside, who had won
just four games over the previous two seasons combined, matched that total in dramatic and
impressive fashion.  First year head coach Mark Diacopoulos' Marlins hung tough, forced
overtime and snatched a 2-1 victory at Beach District contender Kellam, dealing the Knights
its first loss of 2010 after surviving a tough non-district slate.  Meghan Magee provided
Bayside's match-winner by finishing off a 25 yard free kick... Two perennial front-runners in
the Southeastern District tripped up for ties in their district openers.  Defending champion
Hickory settled for a 1-1 decision with Oscar Smith while Great Bridge was held to a
scoreless draw with Western Branch... The only thing that could've "one-upped" the
aforementioned results was brewing back in the Beach as Green Run held Cox to a 1-0
halftime scoreline.  The Falcons were able to avoid the upset and distance late for a 4-0
result with Meredith Corner scoring twice... Plenty of other games to speak of around the rest
of the Region.  First Colonial blanked Salem 4-0 in the Beach, Grassfield picked up a 2-0 win
over Nansemond River in the SED, and, on the Peninsula, Menchville survived Kecoughtan
3-2 while Warwick slid past Woodside, 2-1.  Teams who rolled to easy wins in their
respective districts Tuesday include Denbigh, Gloucester, Indian River, King's Fork and
Phoebus.  Other multiple goal scorers throughout the Region were Wehner (KF) with three,
and Lauren Cheatham (DENB), Hannah Nierle (DENB), Brittany Beaty (FC), Admire (IR), and
Beasley (IR) with two each.  BOYS:  First Colonial, looking to rebound from a rivalry loss
Friday, didn't fare any better against always-tough Salem at home Tuesday night, losing 1-0.
Kharlton Belmar's low hard shot off a 75th minute counter slipped through a crevice, providing
all the cushion the SunDevils needed to take three more valuable points.  "It is a big win,"
wrote Salem head coach Jason Byzewski in an e-mail conversation Wednesday.  "We have
finally started playing together as a team and playing for the whole 80 minutes... Getting the
victories over FC and Kempsville has lifted our spirits and has us believing in ourselves
come the final five minutes of the game."  Byzewski reported that the SunDevils start was
exactly what they needed to start the Beach schedule after a non-district slate where they
dropped three matches very late in regulation... The SED's team of the previous decade
settled for one point in its 2010 district opener at home.  Hickory halved a 2-2 decision with
up-and-coming Oscar Smith.  Richard Diaz increased his 2010 goal total to 15 with both of
the Tigers' goals... Defending Peninsula Champ Kecoughtan took its first beat of District play,
losing 1-0 at home to soccer rival Menchville.  Corey Gillespie scored the Monarchs'
match-winner off a Casey Costa assist to get the huge PD win... Also up north, Bethel won a
big one over Gloucester, dealing the Dukes their first PD defeat, 2-1.  Paul Hem with both
Bruin goals to increase his seasonal total to eight... and Warwick got three tough points at
Woodside, winning 3-1.  The rest of the Region was mostly business as usual Tuesday.  On
the Southside, Cox and Kellam coasted on the Beach in their respective Tuesday fixtures,
Great Bridge shut-out Western Branch 3-0, King's Fork won 3-0 over Deep Creek, while
Grassfield and Indian River ran away with double-digit SED opening wins.  Back on the
Peninsula, things were a big tighter with Denbigh beating Hampton 5-3, and Phoebus
holding off Heritage 3-1.  Other ER multi-goal scorers reported Tuesday included Ritchie
Duffie (IR) logging a hat trick, and Hunter Byrnes (COX), Eric Bird (COX), Chase Montambo
(GRAS), Michael Snyder (GRAS), Will Cason (GB), Paul Dillon (IR), Alex Feliciano (KEL) and
Washburn (KF) all scoring two apiece.

Ottey strikes thrice as Trucker boys beat Warriors
One game on the Regional slate Monday night was a boys clash in Portsmouth.  There,
Curtis Ottey logged a hat trick as Churchland shut-out Nansemond River 4-0.  Ottey has five
goals scored over the past two matches for the Truckers (3-5-0).  Both teams as well as the
rest of the Eastern and Southeastern Districts get their competition underway this week.  The
SED opens tonight with a full slate across Chesapeake and Suffolk while the Eastern kicks
off Thursday night.

April 16, 2010
Loaded with clean sheets, Beach play opens
BOYS:  Cox won a battle of neighborhood rivals, just not in the neighborhood.  The Falcons
shut-out First Colonial 3-0 Friday night at the Sportsplex thanks to a goal and assist effort by
Eric Bird.  The Falcons extended their winning streak to 13 as they out-shot the Patriots 20-8...
Kharlton Belmar's match-winner was enough for Salem to pick up three points in a 1-0 win
over Kempsville... Shutouts continued throughout the rest of the Beach as Ocean Lakes
blanked Bayside 4-0, Landstown defeated Tallwood 4-0, and Kellam blasted Green Run 9-0.
Multiple Beach goals scored by Kellam's Alex Feliciano (3) and Rohen Gresalfi (2), and
Landstown's Clay Newton (2) who also picked up two assists... On the Peninsula, Menchville
earned a 3-0 shutout over Woodside, Sebastian Miller had two in Gloucester's 6-2 rout of
Hampton, and Bethel ran away with a 10-1 result over Heritage as Paul Hem and Steven
Collins each scored twice.  GIRLS:  In the only Beach District opener that didn't result in a
shutout, many assumed that Cox and First Colonial would combine for a goal or less.  After
all, both teams entered Friday's match at the Sportsplex having only allowed a goal each
through six matches.  That thought was put to rest 19 seconds in as Kara Braunstein gave
Cox an early lead, providing the precursor of the wild things to come.  A couple PK's, some
cards and excitement later, the Falcons emerged 5-2 winners over the Patriots.  Jessie
Klamut had a pair of goals for Cox... Jessica Kilmurray scored in her third consecutive game
for Tallwood who won 3-0 at Landstown to improve to 5-2-0 overall.  Kilmurray has scored six
goals in her last five tilts for the Lions... Kellam, Ocean Lakes, and Kempsville all cruised to
victory in their Beach debuts.  The Knights beat Green Run 6-0, the Dolphins beat Bayside
4-0, and the Chiefs silenced Salem 5-0... On the Peninsula, Menchville shook off a 1-0 defeat
a night ago at Denbigh Baptist with its second PD victory, a 1-0 decision over Woodside with
Cassie Kuykendall scoring the Monarch goal.  In Hampton, Gloucester also moved to 2-0-0 in
the district with a 6-2 win over the host Crabbers.  Linsey Snavely with three goals and two
assists for the Dukes... Outside of district play, Hickory took a 3-1 result over Norfolk
Collegiate, Mary Morgan scored twice for Maury who ended a five game skid by beating
Western Branch, 3-0, and Nansemond River came back from North Carolina a 3-0 winner at
Currituck County.  Danielle Gallagher twice logged goals for the Warriors (3-3-0).

Leading scorers 'trick' each other into goal marathon at Powhatan
BOYS:  Oscar Smith's Richard Diaz and Granby's Chris Edmond entered 'Tax Day' 1-2 on the
list of leading Eastern Region goal scorers, and they did not disappoint when their Tigers and
Comets squared off at Powhatan Field.  Diaz and Edmond each put three goals on the board
for their respective teams in a non-district match that came down to overtime.  In the first extra
frame, Alex King provided the match winner as Granby held off Oscar Smith 5-4.  Diaz
remains the Region's goal leader with 13 while Edmond took sole possession of second
place with 10... Four Peninsula District schools decided to get the weekend started a little
early.  Warwick, after competing in one of the most difficult non-district schedules in the
Region, ended a ten match winless skid with a 2-0 result over Phoebus.  Staying in Newport
News, Kecoughtan improved to 2-0-0 in the PD with a 4-1 win over Denbigh.  Frank Hughes'
Warriors are 3-0-1 in their last four tilts... Elsewhere, Lakeland dealt Norview its second
straight loss in as many nights while staying perfect since the break.  The Cavaliers won 3-1
at home over the Pilots while, in Smithfield, King's Fork picked up a solid road win out of
district, 1-0 on the Packers' home pitch.  GIRLS:  The Peninsula District yielded a pair of
draws Thursday with defending champ Denbigh going scoreless with Kecoughtan and
Phoebus tying Warwick 1-1.  April Stone scored her fifth goal of the season for the Raiders...
In non-district action on the Southside, plenty of Eastern District teams continued preparation.
Indian River dealt Churchland a 2-0 blemish, Granby and Oscar Smith battled to a stalemate
at Powhatan, Lake Taylor fell 3-1 to Northampton and, in Suffolk, Norview brought a 4-2 win
over Lakeland back with them to Norfolk.  Jillian Bates with both Lakeland goals as she
remains the only Cavalier player to score with all five of their 2010 strikes.
