District Week 2010 ends with five top seeds winning finals
BOYS:  Cox closed out their first sweep of Beach District Championships in 12 attempts as a
#1 seed, shutting out Princess Anne 4-0 at the Sportsplex.  In fact, a sweep hadn't occurred in
the Beach since First Colonial accomplished the feat in 1998.  Hunter Byrnes provided both
strikes for the Falcons in the first half, jamming one in near post off an Eric Bird feed in the
sixth and adding a low ball into the left corner of the net off a left side cross from Chris
Albiston in the 12th.  Aldo Pflucker and Ryan Suyama provided late scores for Cox who won
its 25th straight match... On the Peninsula, Justin Roll's 33rd minute goal was just enough for
Menchville to get past Kecoughtan 1-0 for the Peninsula District sweep, thanks to Dave
Johnson's live blog on HRvarsity.com... Will Cason added some insurance to his first half
penalty as Great Bridge beat Oscar Smith 2-0 in the Southeastern District finals at Grassfield
HS.  GIRLS:  Emory Camper's 26th minute goal off a Jessie Klamut feed from the right put
Cox ahead of Ocean Lakes for the outright Beach District sweep, 1-0.  The Falcons win both
the Regular Season and Tournament titles for the third straight year... Caitlin Smith scored
her fourth goal of the playoffs in the 51st minute for Kecoughtan who beat Gloucester 1-0 to
claim the final spot in next week's Eastern Region Girls Soccer Tournament.  The Warriors
will face Maury in the Eastern Region Quarterfinals...  Grassfield added a first ever
tournament championship to their first regular season title in the Southeastern District,
earning the clean sheet over Great Bridge, 2-0.  Lexi Jones with the eventual Grizzly match
winner in the 43rd and Samantha Phillips with the second goal.

THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT: Thursday's soccer district finals

May 26, 2010
Princess Anne boys upset Kellam, 3-1
Wednesday's district tournament play around the Eastern Region yielded some unforgettable
results for many Eastern Region soccer programs.  BOYS:  Trevor Nichols' 67th minute goal
off a left side cross from Jahleel Gardner gave sixth-seeded Princess Anne the lead.  Four
minutes later, Daniel Duke ripped a 25-yarder inside the left corner of the net off a Matt
Schwartzer feed as the Cavaliers eliminated #2 Kellam 3-1 in Wednesday's Beach District
Semifinal.  German Royo gave PA the lead in the 11th minute, settling a ball popped up in the
box and sliding his second touch inside the far left post for the Cavaliers, while Alex Feliciano
finished a right side touch from Rohen Gresalfi in the 33rd to tie it for the Knights.  Princess
Anne, the oldest current high school in the Beach, qualifies for the Eastern Region Boys
Soccer Tournament for the first time in school history... Granby will represent the Eastern
District as its #2 seed following a 2-1 ED finals victory over Lake Taylor.  Chris Edmond
scored first for the Comets, then Ibrahim Barsallo-Wright tied things up before half for the
Titans.  Paul Melshen then fed Alex King for the 72nd minute title-winner... Richard Diaz
increased his season goal total to 30 with two goals and two assists as Oscar Smith
knocked off Hickory 4-2 for its first ever win over the Hawks.  Stephen Melchor's strike off a
Diaz assist gave the Tigers a 3-1 halftime lead, and Ryan Trotman's second half strike
helped to put away Hickory, a state semifinalist from a year ago.  Andrew Clayton and Kyle
Gaskill scored for the Hawks.  The Tigers fill out the Regional boys field (their first trip since
1992) as SED Regular Season Champion Great Bridge beat Indian River 2-1 in a
come-from-behind effort.  Marcus Luster tied it up for the Wildcats before Halftime, and Mac
McCarter scored on a 56th minute header to put Great Bridge in Thursday's final.  GIRLS:
Kayla White's two goals led Ocean Lakes to a 2-1 Beach District semifinal victory over
Kempsville at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex, allowing the Dolphins to also qualify for
Regionals for the first time.  White followed up her own saved shot off a left-to-right diagonal
from Kendra Mikatarian with a 43rd minute blast to put Ocean Lakes ahead.  The Chiefs
knotted the score at 1-1 14 minutes later when Rachel Wallace finished a Dolphin deflection
in the box off a left side corner kick.  The score remained tied until the 76th minute when
White accepted a Candice Shields corner kick at the far left post and delivered the match
winner in this Beach District Girls Soccer Semifinal... Mary Morgan will enter her fourth
Eastern Region Girls Soccer Tournament with 46 goals on the season (185 career) after her
double helped Maury shut-out Granby 4-0 for the Eastern District title at Powhatan.  Anna
Cronin and Lauren Wilson also scored for the Commodores.

Cox girls eliminate Kellam in 3OT battle
GIRLS:  Jessie Klamut polished off a left side run from Molly Jarrett in the 94th minute to put
Cox back in the Beach District Tournament finals at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex, defeating
Kellam 1-0.  The Falcons, who out-shot the Knights 21-14, had four saves from Rachel King
while Allyson Brown added six stops for Kellam.  The Cox victory means that the winner of
Wednesday's Ocean Lakes/Kempsville semifinal will earn the #2 Beach seed to Regionals...
In the Southeastern District semifinals in Chesapeake, Tara Kerns' ninth minute strike was
enough for Great Bridge to advance past #2-seed Western Branch, 1-0.  Kerns' goal turned
out to be the only scored at Grassfield High School as the host Grizzlies and the Indian River
Braves battled through 100 minutes of scoreless soccer.  Grassfield would advance 3-0 on
penalties, officially giving Great Bridge the nod to Regionals...  BOYS:  Kecoughtan avenged
its regular season defeat to Warwick by ousting the Raiders from the Peninsula District Boys
Soccer Semifinals Tuesday in Gloucester.  Anders Hasselquist's unassisted goal in the 12th
minute stood up for the Warriors who won 1-0 to qualify for Regionals.  Kecoughtan will face
Regular Season Champion Menchville, a 2-1 winner over Gloucester, on Thursday at 7pm.
The Monarchs found themselves tied in the 47th minute when Sayer Fisher equalized a
late-first half Menchville goal by Rue Custis.  Jack Nichting scored the Monarch winner in the
65th from outside the six-yard box...  Back in the Beach, Cox won its 24th straight game,
defeating Landstown 3-0 behind goals from David Ellis, Hunter Byrnes and Chris Albiston.
The Kellam/Princess Anne boys winner will, too, make it to next week.

Lower seeds prevail in PD girls semis
GIRLS:  Apparently, getting a game in the first round has its merits, especially if you are in the
2010 Peninsula District Girls Soccer Tournament.  Host Gloucester avenged their last defeat
in the first semifinal in defeating Denbigh, 2-1.  Leslie Coates leveled Patriots with the Dukes
in the 33rd minute, less than 90 seconds after Linsey Snavely put Gloucester ahead.  Snavely
put Gloucester ahead for good in the 71st minute off a Jess Kersey assist.  Kecoughtan later
dealt regular season champion Menchville its first and only defeat to a PD school this
season, 2-1.  The Warriors went ahead late in the first half on a Sierra Hargraves goal and
added insurance with Caitlin Smith's 55th minute strike.  Kecoughtan and Gloucester will
battle for the second and final bid to Regionals in Thursday's PD final... Beach District
Quarterfinals kicked off Monday night with some tight results.  Kellam got a big goal early
second half by Mei Nagahama and a late goal from Mikayla Plansker to advance to
tomorrow's 5:15pm semifinal at the Sportsplex, 2-1 over First Colonial.  The Knights earn a
rematch with top-seeded Cox who pulled away late for the 4-1 win over Tallwood.  Jessie
Klamut with two Falcon goals in the opening half.  Ocean Lakes and Kempsville round out the
remainder of the Beach District semifinal bracket.  The Dolphins needed a late Taylor Smith
penalty to survive pesky Bayside, 1-0 while the Chiefs shut-out Princess Anne 3-0 in the 2/7
match at Kellam HS...  BOYS:  Sixth-seeded Princess Anne again drew Salem, this time
forcing penalties after 100 minutes of scoreless play.  The Cavaliers advanced with the 6-5
shootout win, officially going in the book with a *1-0 victory based on VHSL guidelines.  The
Cavaliers will take on Kellam Wednesday night at the Sportsplex after the Knights came from
a goal down at halftime with a Alex Feliciano equalizer in the 61st and a Rohen Gresalfi
match winner in the 64th to beat First Colonial, 2-1.  On the top half of the bracket, Cox slid
past Ocean Lakes 2-0 with goals by Eric Bird and Hunter Byrnes while Landstown picked up
the 2-0 clean sheet at home over Kempsville.  The Falcons and Eagles go back at it Tuesday
night, also at the 'plex.

DISTRICT WEEK 2010 - A brief look ahead
District tournaments around the Eastern Region kick into full gear this week.  All but one of
the #2 seeds are up for grabs at this point, and this year's group of teams are loaded with
spontaneity.  Here's a look into each set of District Tournaments (in alphabetical order by
district):

BEACH DISTRICT
Quarterfinal play gets underway tonight (weather permitting, of course) with doubleheaders at
the sites of the top 4 boys seeds with the corresponding girls game starting first at 5:15pm.
The Cox boys will attempt to end the drought of Beach District #1 seeds losing in its district
tournament.  It's a feat the Falcons have never achieved in 12 previous tries and one that has
only been accomplished three times since tournament play was introduced in 1992 to the
Beach, last occurring in 1998 (First Colonial).  The remainder of the top contenders will try to
deal Cox its first loss since last year's Beach tourney.  For the girls, Cox survived an early-May
loss to Ocean Lakes and kept winning while the rest of the contenders drew their way out of
contention.  The Falcons, headed to Regionals for the ninth time in the past 10 years and
going for their third straight Beach sweep, head a wide-open field that features some difficult
matchups all across the board in a district better known for its defensive play in 2010 than
striking capability.  Six of the top 11 scoring defenses in the Eastern Region are teams from
the Beach District with Cox, Kempsville and Kellam topping the list in order.
EASTERN DISTRICT
They are down to the finals at Powhatan Field this Wednesday.  The girls final will feature ED
powerhouse Maury and their rivals from Granby (Commodores won the regular season
meeting 3-1).  Leading scorer Mary Morgan (44 goals) scored her district season low in ED
goals against the Comets with two.  Granby has rebounded from a two match losing streak
with three straight wins including a 1-0 semifinal victory over Churchland.  In the boys final at
7:30, Granby battles Lake Taylor to see who will join Maury in Regionals and face Menchville
in a June 1 quarterfinal.
PENINSULA DISTRICT
The top two girls soccer seeds hit the pitch tonight at Gloucester HS in the semifinal round of
the Peninsula District Girls Soccer Tournament.  The host Dukes will face 2-seed Denbigh at
5pm in a rematch from May 11 regular season finale in while the Patriots prevailed, 2-0.  In
the 7pm nightcap, top seed Menchville takes on Kecoughtan.  The Monarchs, who have won
all their matches vs. PD competition, faces a Warrior team who fell on the short end of a 3-2
decision but have since won five of seven.  In Tuesday's boys semifinals, Kecoughtan looks
to defend its crown in a 2009 PD tourney rematch with Warwick at 5pm while Gloucester
plays virtual host to Menchville (who has only allowed one goal against PD teams) at 7pm.
The Dukes and Monarchs went scoreless back on April 23 while the Raiders beat the
Warriors 1-0 on May 11.
SOUTHEASTERN DISTRICT
Semifinal play begins Wednesday in another set of wide-open fields for SED soccer at
Grassfield HS.  The girls' 2 v 3 match at 5pm Wednesday features a gritty Great Bridge side
taking on Western Branch who had rattled off six straight wins before falling to Indian River
May 18.  The Braves take on the host and regular season champion Grizzlies at 7pm in a
rematch from May 4 where Grassfield needed OT to beat IR, 2-1.  In Thursday's boys
semifinals, always-tough Hickory faces surprisingly-good Oscar Smith - two sides who went
2-2 back on April 20 - at 5pm.  Indian River, who took two shutout victories after a three game
winless stretch to sneak into the tourney past Grassfield, faces regular season champ Great
Bridge (7pm) who boasts the second best scoring defense in the Region, allowing eight
goals over 16 fixtures.

May 20, 2010
Kecoughtan boys need OT to advance to PD semis
BOYS:  Ian Yusuf's goal in extra time Thursday allowed Kecoughtan to prevail 2-1 in
come-from-behind fashion over Denbigh and advance into the semifinal round of the
Peninsula District Tournament in Gloucester.  The Warriors will face Warwick Tuesday in the
first of the PD semis followed by top-seed Menchville taking on Gloucester.  The Dukes
crushed fourth-seeded Bethel earlier in the first round, 5-0.  Scott Holthaus and Corey Sindle
led Gloucester with two goals apiece... In the Beach District, Cox capped off a perfect regular
season with a 2-1 victory over Kempsville, scoring their goals within a span of 22 seconds.
The Falcons will host Ocean Lakes Monday in the opening round of the Beach District
Tournament while the Chiefs, the #5-seed, will travel to Landstown to face the Eagles.  Ocean
Lakes captured the eighth and final playoff spot with a 3-0 shutout of Green Run while
Landstown rolled 6-0 over Bayside.  Clay Newton had three goals and Garrett Halfhill two for
the Eagles.  Kellam nabbed the #2 seed in the Beach with a 3-0 victory over First Colonial
whom they will see again in the quarterfinals.  Princess Anne ended Tallwood's 2010
season, 5-1 as JP Lopez scored twice for the Cavaliers.  PA heads to Salem Monday in the 3
v. 6 game... Great Bridge took its victory lap Thursday with a 6-0 decision over Nansemond
River to head into the postseason 13-1-2.  King's Fork closed its season with a 4-0 shutout of
Lakeland, led by two goals from Terrance Alexander.  GIRLS:  Cox's decision to rest plenty of
players a night ago when edging Salem paid massive dividends on Thursday as they
emphatically took the Beach District Regular Season title for the 16th time in program history,
dealing Kempsville a 3-0 result.  The Chiefs had entered their final regular season tilt having
only allowed four goals including one in the Beach.  That came tumbling down as Kempsville
draws the #2 seed and will face Princess Anne Monday at Kellam HS.  Cox, on the other
hand, has assured itself a fifth straight return to Regionals but the big question beforehand is
who will they play next?  Tallwood lost 3-0 to Princess Anne while Landstown was clipped 2-1
by Bayside (Kaitlyn Clunan with two goals), leaving a three-way tie for the eighth and final spot
as Salem was idle.  Since they all went 1-1 within the tie and all beat Green Run for their other
Beach victory, the decision came down to the Beach District Principal's draw done before the
season.  We now know that Tallwood will take the eighth seed and will play at Cox Monday.
Elsewhere,  Kellam picked up its second straight scoreless tie in as many nights, this time
with First Colonial.  The Patriots and Knights will give it another try Monday at Landstown HS.
Ocean Lakes will face Bayside at Salem HS as the #3 seed after they walloped Green Run
8-0.  Kayla White with the Dolphin hat trick... Great Bridge is the fourth and final team in next
week's Southeastern District Tournament.  The Wildcats took Hickory out of the discussion
after beating Nansemond River 2-0, earning the #3 seed since they beat Indian River
head-to-head, and drawing Western Branch in the SED semifinals on Tuesday night.
Grassfield will face Indian River in the other semi.  As for Hickory, they will miss out on a trip
to Regionals for the first time since 2002.  Elsewhere in the SED, King's Fork closed their
2010 season on a high note by blasting Lakeland 6-1.  Nichols and McNamara with a pair of
Bulldog goals each.

Cox boys close out Beach District title
BOYS:  Zac Eckert's 24th minute goal was enough for Cox to wrap up its third straight and
13th overall Beach District Regular Season Championship Wednesday at Salem, 1-0.  The
Falcons set a team record for consecutive wins (21).  Rohen Gresalfi scored late in regulation
as Kellam defeated Kempsville 2-1 to creep within a point of Salem for second.  The Knights
can clinch the #2 seed with a win or tie against First Colonial Thursday.  The Patriots shut
down Ocean Lakes 3-0 to lock up a berth in the Beach District Tournament.  The Dolphins
need a win paired with a Tallwood loss or tie to Princess Anne to make the tournament with
the eighth seed... Great Bridge wrapped up its first Southeastern District title since 2003 the
same way the Grassfield girls accomplished it yesterday - while idle.  Grassfield lost 2-0 at
Hickory, providing enough distance between the Wildcats and the rest of the SED with one
match remaining at Nansemond River.  Oscar Smith picked apart Deep Creek 10-0 with four
goals by Edison Dinwayo and three by Richard Diaz, increasing his region-best total to 28.
Therefore, the Hawks and Tigers qualify for the SED tourney while the Grizzlies are the first
team left out of, what we at
E.R.S.O. believe to be, a ridiculously-small four team field...
Granby will face Lake Taylor next week for the Eastern District Tournament Championship
after they defeated Churchland 4-1 in the semifinals.  Christian Rivera led the Comets with
two goals.  GIRLS:  Anna Davis' seventh minute goal sealed Churchland's fate Wednesday
night.  Granby advanced to both the Eastern District finals and the Eastern Region
Tournament with the 1-0 victory, avenging their regular season loss to the Truckers... Cox
barely took care of business in their Wednesday Beach District tilt, edging Salem 1-0.  The
bigger story is that the Falcons gained crucial ground on the rest of the top five who all tied in
their games.  Kempsville and Kellam settled for the scoreless draw while First Colonial
halved Ocean Lakes, 1-1.  Wednesday's Beach results mean that Thursday's Kempsville/Cox
match will decide the Regular Season title.  A Cox win or tie will give the trophy to the Falcons
while a Kempsville win clinches the top seed for the Chiefs... Grassfield added to its closing
margin in the Southeastern District table, edging Hickory 2-1.  Nicole Wagner provided both
goals for the Grizzlies.  The Hawks may find themselves out of the running for a tournament
berth should Great Bridge beat Nansemond River Thursday night.  A Wildcat loss or tie
results in a rematch between the Grizzlies and Hawks in the SED semis.  Indian River also
officially qualified for districts thanks to the Grassfield victory... Thanks to a Kecoughtan
source, we now know Kecoughtan defeated Woodside 3-0 in the Peninsula District
quarterfinals (two goals by Caitlyn Smith) to set up a semifinal meeting with top-seed
Menchville.  Earlier in the day, Gloucester beat Hampton 5-2 to move on to face Denbigh in a
May 24 PD semifinal.

Titans upset Maury in ED boys semifinal opener
BOYS:  Dino Canales' 35-yarder early in the second half stood up for Lake Taylor as they
knocked Maury out of the Eastern District Tournament, 1-0.  The Titans win, coming a night
after they played their way into the tournament, advances them to take on the winner of
tonight's Granby/Churchland semifinal on May 26 with the tournament champion taking the
second and final bid from the ED... Many games were postponed to later in the week in the
Beach and Southeastern Districts due to the high rainfall amounts but some games were
completed.  In the Beach, Princess Anne throttled Bayside 6-1 with Jake Semler scoring twice
for the Cavaliers, and Landstown cruised 9-1 over Green Run as Corey Van Heest, Matt
Streett and Travis Brent each recorded doubles... Indian River assured itself a spot in the
SED Tournament by shutting out Western Branch 3-0.  Paul Dillon logged two goals for the
Braves.  GIRLS: Maury advanced to May 26's Eastern District Tournament final by beating
Lake Taylor, 9-0 thanks to five goals by Mary Morgan and three from Anna Cronin... Grassfield
became the third team in 2010 to notch a regular season championship.  Thing is, the
Grizzlies accomplished this on Tuesday without even playing because of the weather.  The
title was officially clinched after Western Branch fell 1-0 to Indian River.  The Braves will now
wait and see how Hickory and Great Bridge, the teams currently placed fourth and fifth in the
table, will fare in their final regular season fixtures Wednesday and Thursday night.  Oscar
Smith completed the regular season with a 7-1 win over Deep Creek.  Aari Robinson closes
the season with a Tiger hat trick... Bayside assured itself at least a higher seed than Princess
Anne after the Marlins and Cavaliers tied 1-1 in Tuesday's Beach District play.  Landstown
edged Green Run 3-2 as Camille Bartley recorded two goals for the Eagles.

Lake Taylor boys lock up Eastern 4-seed
Michael Dominguez logged three goals and two assists, and Dino Canales chipped in a pair
of finishes as Lake Taylor avenged a scoreless draw a week ago with a 6-0 knockout of
Norview.  The Titans' reward?  Traveling to Powhatan Field tonight for the opening set of
semifinal matches in the Eastern District Tournament where they will face top-seeded Maury
at 7:30pm... In girls soccer, Deep Creek jumped out to a five goal lead and didn't look back,
defeating Lakeland 5-2 for its first 2010 victory.  Peyton with the Hornet hat trick while Brink
added a double.

Kempsville girls roll into first place in Beach
GIRLS:  A week removed from adding a victory over Cox to their resume, Ocean Lakes is back
to looking up at the leaders following Friday's 3-0 collapse at Kempsville.  The Chiefs take
first place in the Beach District entering the regular season's final week while the Dolphins
drop back into a tie for third place with First Colonial, a point behind Cox who was on the bye,
and now three clear of Kempsville.  The Patriots caught the Dolphins by thrashing Landstown
8-1 off an Emily Chesson double, while Kellam and Bayside stayed in solid positioning with
Friday victories.  The Knights rolled 8-0 over Salem with doubles from Kylie Parker and Katie
Keeter, while the Marlins earned the clean sheet over Tallwood, 2-0.  Princess Anne needed
full points in the worst way and got it with a 6-0 victory at Green Run as Kara Natividad and
Aubrey Ashliman each notched two goals... One match took shape in the Southeastern Distrit
as Indian River nipped Nansemond River 2-1.  The Braves, with the win, keep very much in
the running for the fourth and final SED playoff spot.  Tied for fourth with Great Bridge, Indian
River can assure themselves a play-in match or better with a win Tuesday over Western
Branch.  BOYS:  Kellam, a night removed from a loss at Cox, took it to second place Salem at
home Friday night, 3-1.  As a result of the Salem loss, Cox now is in the Beach District driver's
seat after its bye, needing at least two team points over the final two tilts to secure sole
possession of another Beach regular season crown.  Landstown shut itself out of the District
regular season title discussion after suffering its third Beach defeat, this time a 2-0 loss at
First Colonial.  The Eagles now stand fifth behind Kempsville who, with goals by Joey
DeValdes and Alex Vaughan, and with the added insurance of what was later confirmed to be
an own goal, moved up into fourth place by beating Ocean Lakes 3-1.  Princess Anne now
stands seventh in the table behind FC after they beat Green Run 4-0, two points clear of
Tallwood who blanked Bayside, 2-0.  Altay Uzun with both goals for the Lions who, as of
today, would hold off Ocean Lakes for the eighth and final spot in the Beach... In the SED,
Indian River scored an important 7-0 win over Nansemond River to move into a tie for fourth
with Oscar Smith, a point behind Hickory, two from Grassfield, and one ahead of Western
Branch entering the final match day.  Seven different players scored for the Braves.  Only
Great Bridge has assured itself a spot in the four-team playoff field.  Elsewhere, Deep Creek
earned its first win in league play, 2-1 over Lakeland.

Cox, GB boys, Grassfield girls inch closer to Regional bids
BOYS:  Kellam has had Cox's number since head coach Craig Powers took over the program
in 2006, going 5-0-1 against the Falcons.  In that same span, the Falcons have made three
VHSL Group AAA Championship appearances, coming home with one of the trophies in the
process.  Thursday's make-up Beach District match at Cox appeared to be no different as
Kellam held Cox to a season-low in goals scored, trailing just 16-15 in total shots.  Cox
managed to prevail 1-0 on a 68th minute goal by Paul Braunstein to take back the lead over
Salem atop the Beach table entering their bye date.  The Knights get a crack at Salem Friday
night while the Falcons travel to face the SunDevils on Tuesday.  With the win, Cox ties a
program record for consecutive victories (20).  Earlier on Thursday, at the Sportsplex, Clay
Newton scored both goals for Landstown who prevailed 2-1 over Kempsville to move into a
tie for third place with Kellam for whom they hold control of the tiebreaker... Great Bridge took
a big step toward returning to the Eastern Region Tournament for the first time since 2007.
The Wildcats knocked off Hickory, the team who has dominated SED soccer over the past
decade, 2-1.  Ryan Fiesta scored his second goal of the match with under two minutes to go
in regulation to secure the GB victory.  Grassfield moved up to second place for the moment,
dealing Oscar Smith its second straight loss, 1-0 on a 21st minute strike from Kyle O'Brien.
Western Branch also kept its playoff hopes alive by beating King's Fork 3-1... Maury wrapped
up another Eastern District Regular Season Championship Thursday by destroying Booker T.
Washington 8-0, locking up the second of four Regional top seeds.  Granby will be the #2
seed following its 5-0 walloping over Lake Taylor.  Still awaiting final results from the
Churchland/Norcom and Norview/Wilson games to round out the ED Tournament field.
GIRLS:  Grassfield's Southeastern District victory lap will have to wait until Tuesday.  The
Grizzlies settled for their first blemish in district play: a scoreless draw with Oscar Smith.
Grassfield, as a result, loses two points of ground on Western Branch who blanked King's
Fork 4-0 thanks to K. Harper's hat trick.  Grassfield can lock up the district with a tie or better
while the Bruins need a victory Tuesday over Indian River and hope that Hickory plays the
spoiler for the Grizzlies.  The Hawks' streak of consecutive SED regular season titles will end
at five after they tied Great Bridge, 0-0.  The draw also keeps both sides in hot water of
possibly missing out on the four-team playoff field as Indian River and Oscar Smith sit three
points back, the Braves holding a match in hand... Maury wrapped up its 10th victory of the
season and perfect Eastern District slate by shutting out Booker T. Washington.  Granby
thumped Lake Taylor 5-0 to solidify at least a #3 seed in this year's tournament at Powhatan
Field.  The Titans are also in but will have to face Maury in the semifinal round.  While Wilson
will not make the playoffs, they finished 2010 with a winning record after plowing through
Norview 8-2 to level their ED record at 3-3-1, finishing 6-4-1 overall.  Still awaiting word from
Churchland/Norcom.

Cox, Kempsville girls squeeze in wins before storm
A severe thunderstorm that caused play at two sites to halt after 6:30pm caused a light load in
the Beach District to call it a day.  Still, the girls soccer games became official Wednesday
night.  At Cox High School, the Falcons scored two goals in less than a minute to jump on
Kellam, then withstood an own goal and some dangerous attempts from the Knights.  Play
was halted officially at 6:36pm or with 10:38 remaining in the match, and the game became
official shortly after 7pm with Cox beating Kellam 2-1.  At the Virginia Beach Sportsplex,
Kempsville and Landstown made it 67 minutes before play was halted and later made official
with the Chiefs winning 5-1.  Ashley Weidner had a hat trick for Kempsville who gave up a
goal for the first time this district season.

Menchville boys leap up and grab PD title
BOYS:  Menchville capped off an unbeaten Peninsula District regular season campaign by
thumping Hampton 8-0 off yet another hat trick from Justin Kaiser, and later discovered that
was enough to take the Peninsula District Regular Season crown and the first bid to the 2010
Eastern Region Boys Soccer Tournament.  At 7-0-2 in the PD, the Monarchs finish two points
clear of Warwick and Kecoughtan who each went 7-2-0.  Thanks to a head-to-head tiebreaker
(this confirmed by a PD coach), the Raiders locked up the other first round bye to the PD
playoffs after edging the Warriors 1-0 off a second half winner by Chris Jones.  The road back
to Regionals became much longer for Kecoughtan as Warwick will meet the winner of the 3
vs. 6 first round fixture between the Warriors and Denbigh while Menchville will take on the 4 v.
5 winner between Bethel and Gloucester.  The Bruins ended up fourth after the combination
of a 3-2 win over Phoebus (two goals by Paul Hem) and a 1-1 tie between Gloucester and
Denbigh.  Woodside, after struggling through much of the season, ended on a positive note
with a 4-0 win over Heritage... The Southeastern District boys competition continued getting
tighter on its seventh of nine match days.  In a league where really six teams should play in
the tourney instead of four, weekend co-leaders Hickory and Oscar Smith dropped out of first
while Great Bridge jumped back on top of the SED.  The Wildcats vaulted to the top of the
table by dealing Oscar Smith its first district defeat, 2-1.  Hickory slid down to second after
tying Indian River 1-1.  The Tigers move down to third with the loss while Grassfield occupies
fourth after beating Deep Creek 5-0 (Matt Snyder and Travis Landers with two goals each).
Positions one through four are only separated by a point each with Indian River and Western
Branch just on the outside looking two and three points behind the Grizzlies, respectively.  Six
different Bruins combined their goals to slaughter Lakeland 6-0.  Nick Hummel's first half
strike was enough for King's Fork to slide past Nansemond River, 1-0... Not very often does
the Beach District get lost in the shuffle of games but it yielded some pretty interesting results
Tuesday night.  Salem moved into temporary possession of first place with a late-first half
finish by Alex Cox to blank Ocean Lakes, 1-0.  Tallwood won its first Beach match in dramatic
fashion, 5-4 over Green Run.  Altay Uzun with a Lions double while Klaudio Plaku tallied twice
for the Stallions.  Struggling to get victories, First Colonial and Princess Anne both continued
to come up relatively empty, tying each other 2-2 to fall further back in the table.  That marks
three straight draws for PA and two for FC.

GIRLS:  Starting in the Beach, Ocean Lakes moved a step closer in their bid for a regular
season championship by beating Salem 4-1 as Kendra Mikatarian struck twice.  The
Dolphins, who moved into the ESPN Rise National FAB 50 following Friday's win over Cox,
took first place in the Beach heading into Wednesday before Cox, Kempsville and Kellam see
their early-week action.  First Colonial stayed three points back of Ocean Lakes following a
3-1 win over Princess Anne, making head coach Joe Tucei the winningest all-time girls
soccer coach in school history.  Emily Chesson's two goals led the Patriots.  Tallwood
shut-out Green Run 3-0 thanks to two Mikaela Rumley goals for its second Beach victory,
moving into a three-way tie for seventh at six points... Menchville wrapped up an undefeated
Peninsula District slate by slaughtering Hampton 11-1.  Jordan Holt led the Monarchs with
two goals while nine other players entered the goal column.  One other major piece to the PD
girls puzzle was answered as Leslie Coates fifth and sixth goals over the last three games
were all Denbigh needed to secure the second bye over Gloucester, 2-0.  Kecoughtan beat
Warwick 2-0 to solidify the fourth seed.  The Warriors will meet Woodside in the first round
after the Wolverines logged its third PD tie of the season, 1-1 with winless-Heritage.
Hampton draws the sixth and final seed to the playoffs and will face Gloucester in the first
round.  Phoebus closed out its season with a 4-1 win over Bethel to place eighth.  Esmeralda
Coes led the Phantoms with two goals... Grassfield appears headed for its first ever Regional
bid as they maintain a five point lead with two games remaining (Thu vs. Smith, 5/18 @
Hickory).  In order to clinch their first ever SED crown, the Grizzlies must field at least two
points over those games (in other words, two ties or just one win will do the trick).  Grassfield
improved to 7-0-0 and secured a spot in the top four by destroying Deep Creek 13-0 as Lexi
Jones logged three goals and Sara Degruttola scored two.  Hickory claimed a crucial clean
sheet, 2-0 over Indian River, and Western Branch dropped 10 unanswered goals on
Lakeland (three by Fisher) as they stay tied for second at 5-1-1 (16 pts).  Great Bridge, a day
removed from a win at King's Fork, dropped to fourth place after a 1-1 stalemate with Oscar
Smith.  The Wildcats are two points ahead of Indian River for the final playoff spot whil the
Tigers slivers its deficit to one point behind the Braves.  Nansemond River also scored a
victory Tuesday, 1-0 over King's Fork off a Sara Gallagher goal.

Another Eastern District crown for Maury girls
GIRLS:  The 27th annual Eastern Region Girls Soccer Tournament in late-May will feature the
Maury Commodores for the 27th time.  The Commodores clinched its fourth straight and 26th
overall Eastern District Regular Season title Monday with a 5-2 victory over Churchland in
Portsmouth.  The Commodores have represented the ED as its #1 seed every year except
2006 when they finished second in the regular season standings behind Granby.  The rest of
the four-team field is filled as well with Granby edging Wilson 2-1 (Rachel Gillooly scoring
both Comet goals) and Lake Taylor sliding past Norview 3-2.  Booker T. Washington recorded
its first victory of 2010 with a 9-1 pasting of Norcom.  Shawnice Hernandez scored five goals
for the Bookers while Alisha Chin added two... And, in a Southeastern District make-up, Great
Bridge climbed into a three-way tie for second place at 4-1-1 by winning 5-1 at King's Fork.
BOYS:  Maury moved one step closer toward another Eastern District Regular Season
Championship after skunking Churchland on the road, 3-0.  The Commodores need a win or
a Granby loss or tie Thursday to clinch the first Regional berth out of the ED.  The Comets
crushed Wilson 9-0.  Sam Robinson and Kevin McLarty led Granby with two goals apiece.
The Comets and Truckers are in while Lake Taylor left the door open for Norview to potentially
take the fourth and final Eastern District playoff spot after the Titans and Pilots drew 0-0.  Lake
Taylor needs either a win or tie over Granby or a Norview loss or tie at Wilson to lock up the
final spot.  Booker T. Washington picked up its first victory of the season by winning 3-1 at
Norcom.

Ocean Lakes girls earn elusive win over Cox
GIRLS:  In a see-saw girls soccer battle at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex between the two
remaining unbeatens in the Eastern Region, Cox had taken a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute.
Their lead would last all of 14 seconds as Katisha Browne tied the score with an unassisted
strike.  The Dolphins would take the lead for good 12 minutes later as Ocean Lakes clinched
its first win over Cox since 2007 with the 2-1 result.  While the Falcons currently remain the
points leader in the Beach by two, Ocean Lakes and Kempsville now have the benefit of a
match in hand on Cox, making next Friday's showdown between the Dolphins and Chiefs all
the more important.  Kempsville captured its sixth straight shutout, all coming in Beach tilts,
following a 2-0 victory over Princess Anne.  First Colonial walloped Tallwood 7-1 to stay on the
heels of the aforementioned teams.  The Lady Patriots improve to 4-1-1 in the Beach and
9-2-1 overall with the victory as Emily Chesson earned a hat trick and Rachel Rodriguez
chipped in a pair of goals.  Bayside cruised 8-0 over Green Run led by a four goal showing
from Kaitlyn Clunan who now has nine on the season.  Landstown ended a double-digit
losing streak with a 2-1 victory over Salem...  In the Peninsula District, Menchville became the
first team region-wide to win its district and qualify for Regionals, thanks to their 3-1 win over
Heritage.  This became reality after Gloucester tied Woodside 2-2, opening the gap between
the Monarchs and Dukes to five points with one round to go.  Elsewhere, Denbigh rode a
Leslie Coates hat trick to a 6-0 pasting of Phoebus to set up a showdown for the second and
final first round bye to the six-team tourney Tuesday against Gloucester.  Warwick edged
Bethel 1-0 to preserve its chances at a possible playoff bid.  The Raiders will now need a
victory over Kecoughtan paired with a Hampton loss to qualify.  BOYS:  Landstown, after
opening the season unbeaten in its first nine tilts, were trapped into a 1-0 loss to Salem.  The
SunDevils, who picked up yet another match-winner by Kharlton Belmar, remain two points
behind Cox.  The Falcons out-shot Ocean Lakes 30-3 in winning a late game at the
Sportsplex, 4-0.  Elsewhere in Friday's Beach District action, a couple of ties served to
separate contenders from pretenders.  Tallwood logged an impressive 2-2 tie with First
Colonial while Kempsville and Princess Anne also settled for a 2-2 result.  Green Run won its
first Beach game in 2010, 2-1 over Bayside at the Sportsplex... Menchville kept the heat on
Kecoughtan for the Peninsula District regular season crown Friday by picking apart Heritage,
Justin Kaiser extended his hat trick streak to three while Scott Cooper and Rue Custis each
scored twice.  Gloucester won one at home over Woodside who made the final margin
respectable late, 7-4.  Corey Sindle and Scott Holthaus led the way for the Dukes with a pair
of goals each while Anthony Hopkins notched two for the Wolverines.  Warwick dealt Bethel
its second straight 4-0 defeat of the week.  The Raiders have now shut-out four of their last
five opponents in holding third place in the PD standings.  Bethel, despite the loss, did
officially make the field of six along with Denbigh after the Patriots put away Phoebus 2-1
thanks to the first two goals of 2010 from Joe Howell.

Leaders score key wins in Eastern, SED
Every game is key, especially in the Southeastern and Eastern Districts where only the top
four teams qualify for the playoffs for both boys and girls.  BOYS:  Beginning in the
Southeastern District, Great Bridge capped off an important week of wins with a 3-1 result
over Grassfield who was coming off a big Tuesday win at Indian River.  The Wildcats, who
had fallen to the Braves two matches prior, stay a point behind co-leaders Hickory and Oscar
Smith.  The Tigers edged Indian River 3-2 despite two goals from the Braves' Paul Dillon,
while the Hawks shut-out King's Fork 4-0 with two goals from Alex Baumgardner.  Indian
River and Grassfield now knotted in fourth at 12 points apiece, four behind the co-leaders.
Elsewhere in the SED, Western Branch kept their slim playoff hopes alive by beating Deep
Creek 7-3 with two goals by Martin.  David scored twice for the Hornets.  In Suffolk,
Nansemond River earned its second SED victory over Lakeland, 3-1... One of the area's most
historic rivalries continued in Eastern District boys soccer Thursday as Maury clipped Granby
1-0 off the 18th goal of the season scored by Iyke Etonyeaku.  Lake Taylor improved its
chances at a return to the ED tourney by beating Booker T. Washington 8-0 as Adrian
Bravo-Morales and Dino Canales each struck twice.  No report from either of the two
remaining Eastern District games as of Friday morning... And, on the Peninsula, Kecoughtan
moved one step closer to another PD title by thrashing Hampton 7-1.  Josh Richardson led
the Warriors with two goals.  GIRLS:  Grassfield, at 6-0-0 in the Southeastern District, takes a
five point lead into the weekend following a crucial 2-0 shutout of Great Bridge.  Hannah
Carlson provided both goals for the Grizzlies who are now in control of their own destiny as
they attempt to take the SED regular season title for the first time in school history.  The
Wildcats expect to stay right on their heels as they'll play a make-up with King's Fork Monday
night to catch up to second place teams Hickory and Western Branch.  The Hawks blanked
King's Fork 3-0 while the Bruins scored a 10-1 blowout over Deep Creek.  Taylor Callwood, K.
Harper, and Wallace-Zocher all scored two goals for the Bruins.   Oscar Smith was dealt a
tough blow, coming up short against Indian River, 2-1.  The Braves, with the win, hang on to
the fourth position, a point behind for second.  Wrapping up SED play in Suffolk, Nansemond
River coasted 8-0 over Lakeland as seven different Warriors entered the goal column... Maury
moved one step closer to another Eastern District title Thursday at Powhatan, beating Granby
3-1.  Mary Morgan with another multi-goal effort for the Commodores with two.  Maury can
clinch a Regional bid on Tuesday with a win at Churchland.  This, after the Truckers settled
for a 3-3 draw with Wilson.  Nancy Dickson with a pair of goals for the Lady Presidents who, at
2-2-1 in the ED, are two points short of Granby and Lake Taylor for the final playoff spot with
two matches to go.  Lake Taylor picked up its third ED win by dealing Booker T. Washington a
3-0 clean sheet.  Princess Allen with three Titan goals.  Norview earned its first Eastern
District win Thursday, 9-0 over Norcom.  McLannon and Simmons each tallied twice for the
Pilots... On the Peninsula, Kecoughtan swapped positions with Hampton and into a
temporary tie for fourth with Woodside.  The Warriors beat the Crabbers 4-1, responding to an
early deficit with four of their own including two goals by Caitlin Smith.

Cox seizes Beach lead at Landstown
BOYS:  Cox grabbed sole possession of first place in the Beach District Tuesday by winning
the Region's final dual between unbeaten sides.  The Falcons won big at Landstown, scoring
four goals over the final half-hour of play to beat the Eagles 5-1.  Eric Bird scored two goals
and added an assist, and Hunter Byrnes added a goal and two assists for the Falcons.  Cox
now sits two points ahead of Salem, three clear of Kellam, and six points with one less match
remaining on Landstown and Kempsville.  Salem fell back into second after settling for the
scoreless home draw with Princess Anne.  Kellam rode a pair of Ryan Curtis goals to get
back on track at the Sportsplex, 3-0 over Ocean Lakes.  Kempsville whipped Tallwood 5-1 to
improve to 4-1-0 in Beach District play.  Alex Vaughan with a pair of goals for the Chiefs.  First
Colonial also came up big in its 8-1 win over Bayside.  Brian White picked up his second
straight hat trick and Michael Sampson chipped in two more goals for the Patriots... The 2010
Southeastern District race continues to amaze and puzzle now at the midpoint.  Indian River,
a match removed from their win over Great Bridge, was crushed at home by Grassfield, 3-0.
Evan McNair led the Grizzlies with three goals as they end the Braves' six game win streak.
Leading this shuffling table now are Hickory and Oscar Smith who are both 4-0-1.  The
Hawks, led by two goals apiece from Alex Baumgardner and Andrew Clayton, thrashed
Lakeland 10-0 in Chesapeake while the Tigers won 5-0 at King's Fork thanks to three more
goals from Richard Diaz who has now scored three or more times in five games.  Elsewhere
in the SED, Great Bridge and Western Branch took 4-0 wins over opponents Deep Creek and
Nansemond River with each team compiling four different scorers... Peninsula District play is
entering the home stretch, and with two match days remaining, Kecoughtan is in a familiar
position atop the board.  The combination of the Warriors' 2-0 win over Woodside (both goals
by Max Wayman-Arndt) and Bethel falling 4-0 over Menchville leaves Frank Hughes' side one
point ahead of the Monarchs for first place, thanks to one more PD victory to date compared to
two ties.  Justin Kaiser has thrice put the ball in the net in two consecutive games for the
Monarchs who, on the defensive end, have allowed just one Peninsula goal.  The Bruins
move back into a tie for third with Warwick, both just three points behind Kecoughtan.  The
Raiders moved up a spot by shutting out Denbigh 2-0.  Gloucester worked to solidify its claim
on a PD playoff bid by beating Heritage 4-0 thanks to two goals from Sayer Fischer while
Phoebus moves within a point of sixth place Denbigh by beating Hampton 3-1.

GIRLS:  Leading 1-0 at the half over winless Landstown, Cox dropped three more insurance
goals on the host Eagles including two from Molly Jarrett to remain unbeaten at 11-0-1 and
6-0-0 in the Beach.  The Falcons now stand alone above a trio of teams by a five point margin
in the Beach District standings.  Ocean Lakes played a thrilling match at the Sportsplex with
Kellam, coming from an early goal deficit to tie the match before halftime, taking the lead early
in the second before the Knights squared it back up.  The Dolphins and Knights would
eventually settle for the 2-2 draw.  At 4-0-1 in district play and 9-0-2 overall, Ocean Lakes
faces Cox in the final battle of Regional unbeatens Friday night, also at the Sportsplex.
Kempsville is the third Beach District side still without a defeat after they slayed Tallwood 6-0
led by Wiedner's pair of goals.  The Dolphins and Chiefs are now followed in the standings by
Kellam at 4-1-1.  First Colonial, a match in hand on Kellam, also remained right in the thick of
things with a 3-1 decision at home over Bayside.  Emily Leonard with two Patriot goals.
Princess Anne picked up its second Beach District victory of the season by blanking Salem
2-0... One of the oddities of the 2010 season has been the wide disparity of rankings by
publications with regard to many Southeastern District girls teams.  Grassfield, who is ranked
#5 by
757soccer.com but does not appear in The Virginian-Pilot's South Hampton Roads Top
10, remains atop the table following a 2-1 overtime victory over Indian River, who has
occupied a spot in the
Pilot poll for the entire season but not 757.  Sam Phillips with both
Grassfield goals including her 87th minute match-winner.  The rest of the top half of the SED
table stayed in position following wins Tuesday (we'll post their respective rankings as such
[
757/Pilot].  Great Bridge [9/8], who still has a make-up to play with King's Fork, stayed in
second place after a 10-0 dismantling of Deep Creek.  Kerns with a Wildcat hat trick while
Nikki Ivey and Mary Garty scored two goals each.  Oscar Smith remains in a tie for third with
Western Branch and Hickory after beating King's Fork 3-1 led by Storey's double.  Western
Branch narrowly defeated Nansemond River 2-1 to stay in the tie.  As for Hickory [NR/7],
Samantha Hinson's hat trick led to the Hawks' 8-0 win over Lakeland... Four of the six slots
have now been claimed for the upcoming Peninsula District Tournament.  Menchville
solidified its first round bye Tuesday by barely passing Bethel 1-0.  Meredith McDowell has
scored at least a goal in each of the Monarchs' last three fixtures.  Gloucester stays four
points clear of Denbigh for second following its 7-0 walloping of Heritage.  Denbigh blanked
Warwick 5-0 to stay a point ahead of Woodside thanks to two goals apiece from Sam
Scarberry and Christina Major.  As for the Wolverines, they held off Kecoughtan for the 1-0
result thanks to Rachel Green's 13th goal of the season.  The Warriors now sit sixth, two
points behind Hampton and three clear of Warwick.  The Crabbers vaulted to fifth after beating
Phoebus 4-1 off Emily Stumpf's double - her third multi-goal effort in a row.

Granby, Churchland split battles of ED unbeatens
BOYS:  The tie atop the Eastern District standings shrunk to two Monday after Granby scored
a critical 3-1 win on the road at Churchland.  The Comets' 11th overall victory ensures they
stay locked up with rival Maury heading into Thursday's showdown at Powhatan Field.  As for
the Commodores, they had it much easier in a 13-0 thrashing of Wilson.  Iyke Etonyeaku led
Maury with four goals, Tyler Ferring with another hat trick, and two goals apiece from Ryan
Lee and Brandon Sweeney.  Elsewhere in ED play, Lake Taylor crushed Norcom as three
different Titans scored twice, and Norview had little difficulty in beating Booker T. Washington
6-1 for its first district win.  GIRLS:  For the second straight season, Churchland and Granby
needed overtime to settle their Eastern District dispute.  Instead of a tie, the Truckers decided
to take it quickly, getting two goals from freshman Skylar Buzzard as they beat the Comets 4-2
in 90 minutes.  Ashley Rice scored both Churchland goals in regulation.  Mary Morgan struck
again with six goals in Maury's 8-0 victory over Wilson.  Morgan has 22 of her 29 goals in four
ED matches.  Norview and Booker T. Washington split for their first respective points of this
year's district campaign, tying 2-2.  Lake Taylor reached .500 in ED play after a 12-0 beating of
Norcom.  Princess Allen led the Titans with four goals while Asia Burleson added three.
